How Big is your God? Wisdom from Small Mouths…

As I led the class into the church sanctuary for our weekly chapel time, one of my students asked why we were getting more quiet. This bright little girl is still learning English, and it’s a joy to watch her grow in understanding and appreciation of things. I explained to her that we were acting out of respect, because we were entering God’s house. “Es la casa de Dios”, I told her (God’s house). Her eyes widened in amazement. “La casa de Dios? Pero…es tan pequeño!” She was surprised that God’s house was so small.

Isn’t it sometimes, though? For toddlers it can be perplexing when we say God lives in Heaven, and in our hearts, and in church…it’s tough even for adult minds to grasp omnipresence. Often we try to tame the Lord, to make Him manageable and digestible. We can risk losing our wonder at the richness and fullness of our God. He doesn’t follow our rule book. He doesn’t fit in one building. He is beyond anything our minds can fathom or imagine. And what a blessing that is! If the God of the universe can topple nations, but still cares enough to know how many hairs are on my head and hear my feeble cries, surely I can trust Him with my life. No building is big enough. Let us never lose our sense of awe at the majesty of the most Holy Heavenly Father.

The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man,[c] 25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. -Acts 17:24-25
